The western gray squirrel (Sciurus griseus) is an arboreal rodent found along the western coast of the United States and Mexico. The black-chinned hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri) is a small hummingbird. The upper Coyote Creek Trail above Cerritos Regional Park is a great ride: fresh, smooth blacktop and few users. It is one of only three pelican species found in the Western Hemisphere. The biggest problem about mile marker 19.5 is the "hellhole" tunnel: deep and dark (despite lights). The street is Excelsior Dr. and 0.25 miles from the trail, on the far side of the 605 is Glazier Park - a neighborhood park with restrooms and water. Pretty sure Compton is considered the most dangerous city in California. They can be seen during the day, but they are most active in the evening and at night.

Salvia mellifera (Black sage) is a small, highly aromatic, evergreen shrub of the genus Salvia (the sages) native to California, and Baja California, Mexico. As its distribution has been proven to be limited to one single site, it has one of the best claims to being the world's rarest butterfly.

    Eriogonum fasciculatum is a species of wild buckwheat known by the common names California buckwheat and Eastern Mojave buckwheat. Areas of serious erosion on the inside bank, i.e., a 20 deep gully extending to the blacktop common. The trail undulates up and down and recedes into the distance, headed for the Whittier Narrows. The flowers are a nectar source for butterflies and the fruits are enjoyed by many bird species including the road-runner.

    They want to see which way that green cloud of chlorine is blowing. The trail is a well-maintained asphalt pathway as it leaves Royal Oaks Park. Clusters of pale colored urn shaped flowers attract hummingbirds in spring, and large drooping clusters of dark red berries are fed upon by birds in late summer.
